{"id":3513,"date":"2015-06-15T11:39:55","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T15:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peoplesfood.coop\/?p=3513"},"modified":"2019-01-22T18:00:04","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T23:00:04","slug":"make-your-own-natural-insect-repellent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peoplesfood.coop\/newsite\/2015\/06\/15\/make-your-own-natural-insect-repellent\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Your Own Natural Insect Repellent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><i><b>Do-It-Yourself Natural Insect Repellent <\/b><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Ingredients:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">4 oz. clean spray bottle with a fine mist setting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1.5 fl. ounces of distilled water and 1.5 fl. ounces of witch hazel or high-proof alcohol (Drinking alcohol, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><u>NOT<\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> rubbing alcohol.) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">50-60 drops of essential oil(s) of your choice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Directions:<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Fill the spray bottle with the choice of either 1.5 fl. ounces of distilled water and 1.5 fl. ounces of witch hazel or alcohol <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>or<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> 3 fl. ounces of distilled water. (Even though a 4 oz. bottle is suggested, leave about 1 oz. unfilled so you can shake the bottle well between uses.) Then, add the essential oils. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>To Use:<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Shake the bottle before each use. Essential oils do not fully dissolve in water and alcohol and will settle. If you do not shake the bottle, you risk having concentrated droplets of essential oil irritate your skin. Mist onto your skin and clothing and reapply as necessary. Discontinue use if you feel sensitivity from the repellent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Great oils for repelling mosquitos include: Cedarwood, Clove, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Tea Tree.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For a pocket sized option, you can combine essential oils with a carrier oil inside a roll-on container. Some good carriers include vegetable glycerin, castor oil, jojoba oil and almond oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Reapply your natural repellant frequently, especially during times of strenuous activity. Not only are mosquitos attracted to the elevated amounts of carbon dioxide and lactic acid that we produce, but the oil will roll off with the sweat!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If you aren\u2019t concerned about oil spotting on clothing, you can always apply the repellent to pants, shirts, hats, socks and shoes for additional coverage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Geranium oil can also be used to repel ticks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Although many essential oils are safe for use on pets, we <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><u>HIGHLY <\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">recommend that you talk with a veterinarian before applying any homemade solutions to your four-legged friends.
