My name is Dan Gannon and I’ve been serving as a volunteer board member for the past three years. This time of service has been enriching through the wonderful working relationships with fellow members and staff, resulting in personal friendships and practice with cooperative self governance and shared responsibility. My family has also grown in this time and keeping a close connection to the co-op principles seems as important as ever.

Our role, as the board, generally consists of three areas: evaluating organizational performance and planning improvements for long-term health of the People’s Food Co-op of Ann Arbor(PFC); connecting member-owners to the organization in meaningful ways; producing policy language that represents our shared values and agreements in how we operate as a purpose-driven organization. The current board has produced results in these past few years including revision of existing policy language, returning to the roots of Policy Governance as described by John and Miriam Carver in Reinventing Your Board; revisiting focus groups and other public forums for member engagement; and in the last year returning with some regularity to profitability on a month by month basis. We’re seeing positive trends in new member-owner signup and “basket size” indicating that on average more shoppers are finding more of what they want to buy in stock at the Co-op. In order to be financially sustainable, we need to significantly increase sales and connect new shoppers with the goodness of PFC.

What does it look like to regain relevance in the local, just and natural food marketplace? While we were pioneers in that field originally, can we differentiate ourselves amid increased competition? What is the role of a community-owned cooperative in developing a more just local food system? Can we incorporate resiliency and environmental sustainability in our daily operations in a way that shoppers recognize as adding value rather than just adding to the price of goods? Together we can find answers to these big questions.

The board continues its work on issues that inspire my participation: envisioning a revitalized facility, in either a new or our current location, that embodies co-op values and attracts new customers to enjoy the co-op experience; updating policies and bylaws to reflect the emerging needs for operating as a business in today’s world; and making board work more visible through effective communication and meaningful connection to the community at large.

Please consider my application for another term of service.

Susan Randall

1. Why are you interested in serving on the PFC Board?
A vibrant locally owned cooperative grocery is an essential component in a healthy food system. I am seeking a second term on the board because I value this organization and its mission and my experience is relevant to this moment in the Coop’s story.

2. What knowledge, skills, experience, and energy would you bring to the Board?
During my first term on this Board, my knowledge of this Co-op…its people, governance structure, partnerships, and opportunities--grew exponentially. Staying the course for another term allows me and this Co-op to further maximize the fruits of this time investment. I am a sociologist (Ph.D. – Boston University), now retired, with a career that included college teaching, a term in elected office (City Commissioner, Sioux Falls, SD), and over two decades of nonprofit leadership/management (Turn About, then SD Voices for Children). Upon retirement, I founded with my husband an herb growing business—Deer Creek Herbs & Teas—and sold fresh produce at the Sioux Falls Food Co-op and farmers’ market. I served two terms on the Sioux Falls Food Co-op Board. In 2018 my husband and I moved from South Dakota to Ann Arbor to live near our children and grandchildren.

3. What do you see as PFC’s role in the broader community?
The People’s Food Coop is a purpose-driven, locally owned cooperative business dedicated to the people, the planet, and profit that gives back to our community. PFC is at its core a grocery store, which means that it provides the essential, healthy food and wellness products we all need for nourishment while also supporting and building an environmentally responsible community.

4. What priorities do you consider most important to a strong, sustainable future of our co-op?
We must secure a solid financial footing, build on the 55-year foundation this Co-op stands upon, and implement a values-driven, financially-sound plan that responds to the needs of our dynamic, changing community and neighborhoods.

Betsy Williams

Serving on the PFC board offers me the chance to give back to an organization I have witnessed thrive and evolve over the past 30+ years as a neighbor, shopper, and engaged community member. I have a deep respect for its history and am dedicated to working collectively to ensure it continues to lead as a trusted source of healthy, ethically sourced food, a hub for community education, and a catalyst for neighborhood connection and growth. As an architect whose work prioritizes community health, sustainable systems, creative solutions, and outside-of-the box thinking, I will bring an open mind to operational, spatial, and systemic challenges. The Co-op has a unique opportunity to build deeper strategic partnerships (DDA, City leaders, U of M, and organizations with aligned mission) which will require enthusiasm, proactive outreach, and thoughtful advocacy—efforts that I am eager to help with. However, as I learned more about the PFC’s commitment to “promote the local economy, environmental sustainability, health, and economic justice” – work that they are already doing well and hoping to do even better, I was inspired to get more involved and run for a position as a PFC Board Member.

In terms of knowledge, skills, experience, and energy that I’d bring to the board. I’ve spent my career in the public and business side of education. In all my professional roles, I’ve acted as a forward-thinking consensus builder with a history of successfully driving new initiatives. My career has been focused in education/training, business development, and project management and I believe these skills and experience give me a perspective that would be valuable as the PFC continues to evolve.

The PFC’s role in the broader community is truly special. In today’s world small businesses that push forward initiatives which are important to their communities are unfortunately a rarity. The PFC’s relevant and purposeful mission and location put it in a unique position to engage the growing number of downtown residents both in membership and in driving it’s ends policies forward in the wider community.

The priorities I consider most important to a strong, sustainable future of our co-op, include:

• Financial viability, ensuring the coop is operated
in a way that ensures the continuation of its
important mission.
• Understanding who in the community the coop is
serving and how we can both continue to serve
that group, while expanding it’s reach.
• Community education, working to ensure the
community understands what the coop is and the
benefits of ownership.

Thank you for you consideration, if you’re interested in learning more about my professional background here’s my LinkedIn Profile.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniellefalcon/

Victoria Westman

I’m interested in serving on the PFC board because I love co-ops! I also love grocery stores. People’s Food Co-Op is such a special part of Ann Arbor that has stayed constant for decades. I’d like to do what I can to help the co-op reach continued success!

While living on the west side of Michigan, I was deeply involved in several cooperative organizations and was on the board of a few of them. While living in a housing co-op for three years, I had the opportunity to learn the in’s and out’s of cooperative governance. I really like to nerd out about policy, and PFC seems like a great place to do it.

I have a passion for food justice and volunteer weekly with Cooking Matters as a Culinary Instructor, teaching members of my community to cook nutritious meals on a budget. I really love all things food, and have been working at a grocery store for almost 5 years.

As a member-owned organization, PFC owes the broader Ann Arbor community a grocery store and cafe that represents them. PFC provides an open, inclusive space that offers delicious, eco-conscious and sustainable food at a good price. And those veggie samosas on the hot bar! The people need those samosas.

There are a few big priorities that I think would be most important to a strong, sustainable future of the co-op. First, either opening or moving to a new location with more space and parking would open up a lot of great opportunities for community engagement. Second, making healthy, local food more affordable for low-income members of the community would be a meaningful contribution to Ann Arbor. The co-op recently started participating in the Double Up Food Bucks program through
Michigan SNAP benefits, which is a huge
accomplishment. Let’s do more things like that! Lastly, educating members about PFC, co-ops in general, and our specific business model would increase community participation.

Please consider electing me as one of your new board members at PFC! I’m here to help in any way I can!

Patrick Zabwa

Dear Coop Members,

I’d like to submit my application to join the People’s Food Coop Board of Directors. I’ve been actively serving the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti community for the 13 years I’ve lived here and feel called by your request for Board of Directors’ applications to be of service to the People’s Food Coop.

I have been a coop member for many years and fairly regularly shop there. I believe it has an important place in our community as a gathering space for
people of all backgrounds and a source of quality food as the only grocer left in downtown Ann Arbor. Because those aspects are unique to it, it is irreplaceable in our community. Because of its stature, I believe it also has a place leading and inspiring the community in the way it conducts business: as a member-owned cooperative, opening its doors to all, paying living wages, and leading the way in providing sustainable and environmentally-conscious products.

I believe the People’s Food Coop has many challenges: Competitive pressure from Washtenaw County’s plethora of grocers and convenience stores, hiring and keeping staff, and raising capital, among others. I do think, however, that the Coop is well-placed to face these challenges because of the increased growth in the residential population of downtown Ann Arbor in the recent decade and the growth of the sustainable and environmentally-conscious products markets. Emphasizing that the Coop can serve so many of our community’s needs as a grocer, community space, environmental leader, and more should be its priority to give it a strong, sustainable future.

I moved to Ann Arbor from my native Warren, Michigan in 2005 to start my freshman year at the University of Michigan. In 2009, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, but I’ve also always kept service to the community as a focus on my life. I was an active participant in multiple programs at St. Mary’s Student Parish during my undergraduate education, including serving one year on its Parish Pastoral Council. I started a group for young professionals at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia while I lived in Pennsylvania between 2011 and 2013 and began and continue to run the Queer Young Professionals of Ann Arbor/
Ypsilanti networking group since I moved back to Ann Arbor that year. I briefly lived in the Quaker community’s Quaker House in Ann Arbor and eventually formed and continue to live in an unofficial queer cooperative in downtown Ann Arbor.

Should you elect me, I look forward to serving you and our Washtenaw County community.

Sincerely,
Patrick Zabawa

-->[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="3.25" custom_padding="|||" custom_padding__hover="|||"][et_pb_image show_in_lightbox="on" align_tablet="center" align_phone="" align_last_edited="on|desktop" _builder_version="3.23" animation_style="slide" animation_direction="right" animation_duration="500ms" animation_intensity_slide="10%" animation="right" sticky="off"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="3.25" background_size="initial" background_position="top_left" background_repeat="repeat"][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built="1" _builder_version="3.22" background_color="#c9e0df" transparent_background="off"][et_pb_row column_structure="1_2,1_2" _builder_version="3.25" background_size="initial" background_position="top_left" background_repeat="repeat"][et_pb_column type="1_2" _builder_version="3.25" custom_padding="|||" custom_padding__hover="|||"][et_pb_text admin_label="It's Election Season!" _builder_version="3.27.4" background_size="initial" background_position="top_left" background_repeat="repeat" module_alignment="left" z_index_tablet="500"]

It's Election Season!

Let your voice be heard!
